Effective Communication:
For the Effective Communication DRSL, I chose my Argumentative Research Paper for Writing 1010 on the effectiveness of static stretching prior to physical exercise. In this paper, I used many different sources and ideas to convince readers that pre-exercise static stretching is not beneficial. Many athletes and coaches have long thought pre-exercise stretching to be beneficial to both athletic performance and muscle soreness. In order to negate that commonly held belief, I cited many research studies and used those to convince my reader that pre-exercise stretching can actually be harmful. Effective communication requires making sound arguments and presenting them logically. Communicating effectively is an important lifelong skill to develop in order to voice your opinion in a polite and concise manner, while maintaining good relations with those of other opinions.
I chose my Honors English 11 Argumentative Research paper for another example of the Effective Communication DRSL, written prior to me coming to AMES. I chose this research paper as my example for effective communication because I had to use many sources to convince my reader that genetically modified foods are beneficial. In our day and age, people are becoming more resistant to altering the foods we consume. Natural and organic foods have become increasingly popular, and with that popularity has come a suspicion of genetically modified food. Especially when dealing with controversial topics, it is important to communicate ideas independent of emotions. The use of effective communication in our society would help to increase tolerance and acceptance among individuals and groups having opposing political views, religious beliefs, races, cultures, and customs.
